Born in 1994. Based in Tokyo, Japan.

Works in painting and poetry.

At the core of his practice is extensive research into existing mythologies, natural environments, and regional cultures.

During his final year of university, Taro visited Yap Island in Micronesia. His experience living with the local community, coupled with his pilgrimage to Mt. Omine in Nara—the birthplace of Shugendo—exposed him to the otherworldly realms existing between humanity and nature. These encounters led him to pursue art as a means to materialize these invisible sensations.

He began working with photography and poetry in 2017, and painting in 2018. He also conducts auto Narrative, an ongoing archival project on WordPress that compiles fragmented poetry into a continuous series.

STATEMENT

My practice — Paitning and Poetry — walks around a single question: how do we arrive at our primal landscape? The primal landscape, what is called genfūkei in Japanese, is elusive. It lives somewhere within us, and yet we cannot recall it. It holds the power to carry us back to the landscape of our birth, to a moment before we were given a name. 

I walk through many places, sketching and photographing the landscape, and at times returning to the same lands over years. Back in the studio, I reduce these landscapes to shapes and colors. As I let go of representational depiction, the familiar landscape emerges as something unfamiliar, at the borders where the movement of my body, the image, and planes of color meet. For me, painting is a way of acting upon the world. Within my paintings, a green sun — I call it Jade Sun — appears. The color of the light source is inverted, and the world takes on its colors according to different laws.

Poetry is another practice that springs from the same source as painting. In auto Narrative, which I have been writing since 2024, I accumulate fragments of language, sketches of dreams and city scenes, without any blueprint of the whole. In my work, the whole rises from a single poem. I do not set out to complete anything when I write, yet each poem calls forth the next cluster of words.

The primal landscape is not born from gazing into the past. It rises as a new present, beyond the gathering of fragments and the continual renewal of seeing. A landscape never seen before opens within each person who stands before the work. I would like to create such moments through painting and poetry.
